Krinklewood Romance

Emmeline and Evan married at the gorgeous Krinklewood Estate on a misty day in Autumn. The French-inspired boutique Hunter Valley winery and cellar door is set amongst Provencal gardens, urns, and fountains with the Wollombi Brook and Brokenback Range providing a spectacular backdrop. Not only are their wines certified biodynamic, but every aspect of the Hunter Valley vineyard and farm is also managed in a biodynamic, organic, holistic, and sustainable way which aligns perfectly with Film and Foliage’s values and mission to reduce our floral footprint and protec the Earth where our flowers grow.

Creating the blooms for this day was such a special experience for the Film and Foliage team so we thought we would share how the day was for our two lovers.

Read on for sweet insights into Emmeline and Evan’s wedding day.

Tell me a little bit about yourselves and how you become engaged

We have been together for just over 5 years. It sounds cliche, but we are best friends and just love being with each other

Evan proposed in the Blue Mountains at a lookout point when there was no one else around. A few minutes after the proposal happened a group of hikers came down to the lookout. It feels special that it was just us in that moment!

I had Mr & Mrs ceramic coffee cups made for Evan as a small wedding gift. Every morning since we got married, Evan makes coffee for us and we sit together on our balcony with our coffee cups before we head off to work.

Krinklewood is one of our favourite venues to work at. How did you discover this gem and select it over other locations? What were you looking for in a venue?

We found Krinklewood on a weekend away in the Hunter Valley. We weren’t engaged yet, but I remember saying to Evan how incredible it would be for a wedding. At that time Krinklewood weren’t hosting weddings yet. Once we got engaged, Krinklewood was the first place we enquired with and the only venue we ended up viewing. We really wanted a venue where our guests would feel as though they had been transported to Europe and a venue that didn’t require a lot of styling elements (and no marquee!).

Tell me about an unexpected magical moment you experienced on your day:

Seeing the florals that Film and Foliage created for the ceremony was genuinely the most magical moment of the day! I had a pretty clear idea in my head of what I wanted the ceremony space it to look like, but what Ash created just blew my expectations and was absolutely incredible! It made walking down the aisle memorable. So many of our guests have said how magical the ceremony space was.

What drew you to Film and Foliage and why were flowers important to your day?

Krinklewood is such a beautiful venue that we wanted to keep the styling simple. We chose to spend most of our styling budget on the florals because it elevated and integrated with the spaces we were using. For the ceremony, Film and Foliage created the floral arch so that it looked like the flowers were growing from the ground and wrapping around the gate. For the reception, the florals looked like they were growing down the banquet table.

I found Film and Foliage through Instagram. I liked that Ash had done some weddings and photoshoots at Krinklewood and was familiar with the venue. I loved her style of floristry instantly and her sustainable approach. I am so happy we chose Film and Foliage, it was one of the best decisions we made!

What was your vision for the day and how did you choose your style?

We always dreamed of getting married in Italy but covid-19 made planning an overseas wedding too risky. Krinklewood is such a stunning venue that we didn’t need to do much at all! Although the theme was an Italian garden soiree, I wanted the wedding to be formal so I kept the colour palette neutrals and white. I loved that Film and Foliage added in texture and warmth by using different types of flowers.

Rain on your wedding day! How did you deal with the weather? Did it ruin the moment or make it sweeter?

We were both really anxious about the weather in the lead up to the day because we had planned an outdoor wedding. There were a few tears shed (by me). We were able to deal with the weather because we had the most amazing support from our vendors who did everything they could to make sure the rain didn’t ruin our day. Our stylist and on-the-day coordinator made sure that all of our vendors were on board with Plan A, Plan B and Plan C. Fortunately, we were able to hold the ceremony in our favourite space on the property before the rain started! I think the rain definitely made the day sweeter! We love the way our photographs turned out and it meant our guests all mingled with each other and made their own dance floor under the eaves of the cellar door.

The planning process: What was your plan of attack choosing vendors, budgets, making decisions?

We only had 48 guests so planning the wedding was (mostly) stress-free! I did most of the planning (with many spreadsheets!) and Evan was my sounding board. I found Instagram the best way to find vendors that had a similar style to what I was looking for. We were able to stick to our budget - I think mainly because we decided on the type of vendors we would use early on in the planning process, and agreed on the things we would forego.

Did you incorporate any special traditions or unique elements that represented you both?

My family have always celebrated special occasions with a peach bellini cocktail! It’s something my grandfather started years ago and it was a fun tradition to bring Evan into when he first met my family. We decided to serve peach bellini’s during the cocktail hour as a nod to my grandfather who sadly isn’t with us anymore. We also decided to ditch the traditional wedding cake, and go for a chocolate mud cake with caramel ganache!

What’s one piece of advice would you give to loved-up couples planning their day?

Your initial communication with a potential vendor is the best indication of how your working relationship will be like. I stuck to my mantra of only choosing vendors who were responsive, good communicators and took the time to  listen to what we envisioned our wedding day to be like.
